And So It Ends and Begins

This was the last full week of summer and it wasn't quite the week that I had planned.  The week started out well, with lots of trips to the pool and hanging out with friends.  We enjoyed walks and riding bikes and scooters.  We even made it on our first (and likely only) full family bike ride of the summer at the end of the week (despite the events below).

Unfortunately, mid-week things took an unexpected turn.  Carrigan woke up  not feeling well on Thursday.  She had to miss her "meet the teacher" event, her first soccer practice, and a boating activity with her church group.  She is mostly better now, but it still battling some pink eye.

Merrick also woke up in a state on Thursday.  He had come home from camping with bug bites the weekend before.  Then, as the week went on, he got more and more bug bites at football practice.  Each time the bites became swollen and hot and concerning.  I was particularly concerned about two on his forehead that were golf ball sized.  Apparently, on Wednesday his football helmet caused the swelling to start moving.  He woke up on Thursday with his eye almost completely swollen shut and we ended up at urgent care for a steroid injection.  He had to miss his school tour event as well. Side note, at urgent care they measured him at just a hair under 6'3".  Jeremy refuses to believe it.

Yesterday, with everyone mostly better, we went to Merrick's first ever football jamboree.  I don't think I have made a secret of the fact that I am not super excited about football, but it was more fun watching him than I expected.  He had fun and did great.  He had a couple catches at tight end and, defensively, he had a forced fumble and a couple tackles for a loss.

We have one more day of summer before school starts on Tuesday and I have very mixed feelings about the kids going back.  Ready, or not, here it comes.
